Firenze Fire odds to win the 2018 Kentucky Derby were at 81-1. Odds were previously at 40-1.
POST POSITION POSSIBILITIES
He is racing from the dreaded number one post position, which has resulted in some very inflated odds of winning this year's Kentucky Derby.
THE GOOD
Owner Ron Lombardi says "don't count him out" and here is why:
“He won in Saratoga. He won the Sanford, a grade three. And then a couple of months later he won the Champagne at Belmont. So, it's been a great run,” Lombardi said. “And then he won the Jerome.
“He's a great horse. His temperament, he's just mature for his age. He handles the paddock well, he handles the crowds well,” Lombardi said. “We'll see about this, he hasn't faced 170,000 fans so it will be exciting.”
THE BAD
He seems to have very little desire to race farther than a mile, and he’s finished fourth in each of his last two races. He may well be the longest shot on the board.
In the end, it's that post position that has us exercising caution.
