Owen Almighty Recent Performance

Owen Almighty came back in last month’s Sam F. Davis at 1 1/16 miles and finished second, beaten a half-length by John Hancock in a battle royale from start to finish.

“I think he handled the stretch-out fine. He ran into a very good horse, potentially,” trainer Lynch Brian said. “He went through a ding-dong battle and came up a half-length short, but he got a two-turn race under his belt. He’s trained like he’s come on from it. He’ll be a little bit more seasoned this time around.”

Owen Almighty 2025 Tampa Bay Derby Analysis

Owen Almighty Analysis Courtesy of Americas Best Racing: "Owen Almighty is the leading local hope to win the Tampa Bay Derby after two good efforts on the track’s dirt surface. He set a contested pace in the seven-furlong Pasco Stakes in early January and outfinished Naughty Rascal to win by a length, but was disqualified and placed fifth for interfering with an opponent heading into the turn. Then, the Speightstown colt stretched out to two turns in the 1 1/16-mile Sam F. Davis Stakes and finished a half-length behind John Hancock in second after pressing that foe throughout the race. The nation’s leading jockey based on 2025 earnings, Irad Ortiz Jr., has been aboard this colt for his last three starts and retains the mount Saturday. Look for Owen Almighty to be among the early leaders in the Tampa Bay Derby along with Brodeur and Patch Adams, and his experience on Tampa’s surface could give him the advantage. However, even if he wins this race, Owen Almighty will be shortened up in distance for his summer campaign and will not start in the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby, according to trainer Brian Lynch in comments to Tampa Bay Downs’ media office."
