Odds that there will be a triple crown winner in 2025 are typically listed at 7-1 with BetOnline expected to update these odds this week, but expect to pay $100 to win $700 should Sovereignty go on to win this year's Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.  He does look more than capable of doing so.  Let's review our preview of this horse leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

What We Loved About Sovereignty Coming Into the Kentucky Derby

Past Performance (9)

He's won two of his last three races, finishing second in his most recent in the Florida Derby.

The winner of that race has gone on to win the Kentucky Derby a total of 15 times, making it the biggest producer of Kentucky Derby winners.  While he didn't win, Sovereignty's second place finish is nothing to sneeze at.  More importantly, the winner of this year's Florida Derby, Tappan Street, has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer (7)

Bill Mott has won the Kentucky Derby once, in 2019, with Country House.  That, however, was a result of a disqualification.

Mott hasn't had a whole lot of luck in this race considering he's been part of 14 Kentucky Derbies to date.

Mott achieved 91 wins from 612 starts this past year, resulting in a win percentage of approximately 15%.

Jockey (5)

Júnior Alvarado has ridden in the Derby five times, with his best finish being fourth aboard Mohaymen in 2016 . In the 2024 Kentucky Derby, Alvarado finished sixth aboard Resilience .

Why Sovereignty Might Not Win This Year's Kentucky Derby

Post Position (1)

Sovereignty we believed could end up in the No. 17 post position.  No horse has ever won from the No. 17 spot.

Ultimately he ended up in the No. 18 spot, which historically hasn't been great either.

But, in the end, this was the only real downside we saw with Sovereigty.
