Preakness Betting Plummets
For the third time in the past five years, the Kentucky Derby champ will not run in the Preakness Stakes.
It's unfortunate for fans to not be able to root on a Triple Crown bid, but it's a massive financial blow to the bookmakers taking bets on Saturday's race.
BetOnline.ag reported that the Preakness Stakes handle is down 20 percent compared to the Kentucky Derby handle at this same time of the week. The global racebook said that the money wagered depreciation will likely be even higher come Saturday.
"It's frustrating that we're seeing this 'load management' so to speak with horse racing nowadays," BetOnline Brand Manager Dave Mason said. "Sports fans and gamblers who aren't regular racing fans are going to tune it to watch and bet on a Triple Crown contender. But we'll probably see 30%-40% less action for this year's Preakness without Sovereignty in the field."
