Shagaf post position draw landed him in the number sixteen spot and sits at 20-1 odds.
This post position has yielded four wins in 45 starts with three of those coming since 1999, the last being Animal Kingdom in 2011. This is among the most sought out post positions for the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Chad Brown said of the number 16 position, “We were looking for something on the outside with Shagaf with as big as he is so he’ll stay out of trouble. Sixteen will work just fine.”
Though finishing a disappointing 5th in his last start at the Wood Memorial, Shagaf did win his previous start at the Gotham Stakes.
Shagaf opened his career 3-for-3 and earned significant buzz until that loss.
"He didn’t really break well in the mud," Brown said of the Wood. "He tried to make a run there in the final turn and ran into some horses in front of him and had to stop. As you can see here this week, he’s a huge horse with a big stride. He’s like a big locomotive going downhill. I’m not sure how much stopping you can do with a horse like that when you have his momentum going. It’s just one of those things that happen in horse racing sometimes."
