SuddenBreakingNews won the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest in February, finished fifth as the favorite in the Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel in March, and shot back with a second place in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby.  He finished 5th at this year’s Kentucky Derby but will be among a few Derby horses that opted out of the Preakness, thus running on fresh legs.

SuddenBreakingNews comes into Saturday’s race with some controversy.

From the well-regarded Paulick Report:

The recent revelation that Belmont Stakes contender Suddenbreakingnews is not a gelding but a ridgling was a surprise to everyone, including his connections.  Somewhere along his journey, the horse was recorded as having been castrated, when in fact neither of his testicles had descended into his scrotum. The mistake was discovered when Kentucky officials contacted trainer Donnie Von Hemel following unexpected results of anabolic steroid testing around the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, where Suddenbreakingnews finished fifth.
