Chunk of Gold is a 3 year old colt and has raced from 2024 to 2025. He was sired by Preservationist out of the Cairo Prince mare Play For Gold.

Key Factors That Could Lead to Chunk of Gold Winning This Year's Kentucky Derby

Jockey (6)

Jareth Loveberry has recorded 42 wins in 2025 from 307 starts, achieving a win rate of approximately 14% and earning $1,751,731 in purse money.  When compared to the top-tier jockeys, his win totals are more modest.  Though he does not have a Kentucky Derby win, he did finish 2nd behind the winner Mage in the 2023 Kentucky Derby riding Two Phils.

Past Performance (6)

Though he doesn't have a win, his last two starts placed him second in two of the top Kentucky Derby prep races, the Louisiana Derby and the Risen Star.  He had a second place finish prior to that in the Leonatus.

Other Reasons to Like Chunk of Gold (6)

He's considered a Cinderella story and those recent multiple second place finishes stand out as this horse does not appear to be regressing.

Per Blood Horse:

Chunk of Gold was bred in Kentucky by the late Brereton C. Jones, the founder of Airdrie Stud, and sold as a yearling at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale to Chris Melton. Terry Stephens and Melton raced the colt together initially and then Stephens bought Melton's share privately.

"He was a May 11 colt so we kept him back for October (sale) to give him some time to mature," said Bret Jones, president of Airdrie Stud. "This probably shouldn't be discussed but I'll honestly never forget him as a yearling because he tried multiple times to climb out of his stall over at Fasig! He would get up on his hind legs and actually got his front feet over the barrier a few times to the point of it being a serious worry. In hindsight, I'm choosing to attribute that behavior to him being a tough dude that wanted to show us he was the boss. Here's hoping that toughness comes through on Saturday."

Why Chunk of Gold Might Not Win This Year's Kentucky Derby

Trainer (4)

Ethan West's recent achievements includes his first graded stakes victory in the 2023 Bryan Station Stakes (GIII) at Keeneland with Runaway Storm.  He has a win rate of near 16% over the past year.  West does not have a Kentucky Derby victory.

Post Position (1)

With Grande scratched, Chunk of Gold lands in the dreaded No. 17 spot, which is the only starting position to yield zero wins.
