Brad Cox enjoyed a Kentucky Derby win in 2021 with Mandaloun after Medina Spirit was disqualified. He is the No. 2 trainer in North America in winnings in 2024 ($7,953,294), just behind Steve Asmussen at $8.61 million.
"The Preakness is a very prestigious race;” Brad Cox said by phone from Kentucky. “Just like the Derby and the Belmont and all the Breeders’ Cup races. You not only want to win them once, you want to win them multiple times. But you’ve got to win the first one. It would mean a tremendous amount to win the Preakness. Baltimore, the whole atmosphere there all week is nice. It’s a cool weekend of racing to be a part of.”
Catching Freedom did have a strong finish at the Risen Star (3nd). Before and after that race he had wins at the Smarty Jones and Louisiana Derby.
Two winners of the Louisiana Derby have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby: Black Gold in 1924, and Grindstone in 1996. The 1988 winner, Risen Star, went on to become a "Dual Classic Winner" by winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
He would go on to finish 4th in this year's Kentucky Derby.
