Stronghold has not finished worse than 2nd in any of his races with his last two being wins at the Sundland Park Derby and, more recently, the Santa Anita Derby.

Since 2013, it has been part of the official Road to the Kentucky Derby, offering the winner 100 points and thus assuring a position in the starting gate. Since its inception, ten Santa Anita Derby winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, plus seven horses who lost at Santa Anita went on to triumph in Kentucky.

Stronghold ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.98 under Antonio Fresu, who earned his first career Grade 1 victory in the United States.

“I love this horse from the first time I sat on him,” the Italian jockey said. “I was very confident that he could do it, and he did it.”

Stronghold paid $6.40, $3 and $2.40 at 2-1 odds.

“In the stretch I was vulnerable for a closer,” said Frankie Dettori, who was aboard Imagination. “When he passed us, my horse kept fighting back. We were head-and-head, and he was too strong for me down the lane.”

D'Amato is a California-based trainer best known for his knack with turf runners such as Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Obviously and Grade 1 winners like Bowies Hero, Midnight Storm, Gold Phoenix, Going Global, Count Again, and Hunt. Stronghold would be his first starter in the Kentucky Derby.

Jockey (4)

Antonio Fresno scored his first Group 1 and Grade 1 wins on the late Zenden in the 2021 Golden Shaheen and on Stronghold this month in the Santa Anita Derby.

The experience is just not here to instill confidence this Kentucky Derby.
