Mystic Dan's payout odds were one of the most searched for stories appearing on the Gambling911.com website last year. His Kentucky Derby odds were the 6th most read in 2024.
His payout odds to win Saturday's Pegasus World Cup were listed at 10-2 or $100 for every $20 bet at BetPhoenix. (*odds subject to change if not locked in).
Mystic Dan would ultimately go on to win the 2024 Kentucky Derby.
The 150th Kentucky Derby produced one of the most dramatic finishes in its storied history — three noses at the wire.
Mystik Dan desperately fought to hang on with two challengers coming to him in the closing strides. He did, too, after a delay of several minutes while the closest three-horse photo finish since 1947 was sorted out.
Since his Derby win, Mystik Dan has yet to win another race.
He finished second in the Preakness and eighth in the Belmont Stakes before taking time off. He came back in the Malibu where he tried to rally heading into the stretch but ended up last. The Pegasus will be his first start against older horses.
Trainer Kenny McPeek discussed his horse's lackluster performance after returning from a near seven-month hiatus to finish a disappointing sixth and last in the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita to close out his 3-year-old campaign Dec. 26.
“I wasn’t totally surprised by his performance in the Malibu,” McPeek said. “Any time you’re turning a horse back like that after running long so many times it’s really tricky, and in hindsight I question whether I did enough with him. Maybe he just wasn’t ready. But he seems to be very sound out of the race and just wants to go two turns. The race should benefit him going to the Pegasus, so we’ll regroup and try him there.”
