The best post position for a Kentucky Derby horse? That would be No. 10.

No. 10 Post Position

Horses that have run from that post position have gone on to win 10.3 percent of the time. That's pretty good when we're talking about a field of 20 horses.

This year's horse taking off from this position is a good one with Japan's Forever Young at 8-1 odds.

Forever Young has been sensational, winning all of his races. Four of those were stake races.

He broke from an unfavorable outside post and lost ground the entire way in the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan on March 30 , but still pulled off the win.

The problem is no UAE Derby winner has gone on to be victorious in the Kentucky Derby, and much of that likely has to do with the rigorous overseas travel.

No. 15 Post Position Hot This Millennium

Authentic won the 2020 Derby. American Pharaoh (2015), Orb (2013) and Fusaichi Pegasus (2000) also were victorious.

So who is running from No. 15? That would be Grand Mo The First.

He's the biggest long shot paying $5000 for every $100 bet should he go on to win.

Kentucky Derby Post Position No. 8

Although Post 8 is one of the least favorable spots, Mage had no problem winning from there last year, increasing the winning percentage to 9.7%. He was the third horse to win from here in the new Millennium.

Just a Touch will start from the No. 8 spot this year.

So What's The Worst Post Position in the Kentucky Derby?

Remarkably no horse has ever won from the No. 17 spot. Forty Niner came the closest after finishing second in 1988. Don’t Get Mad placed fourth in 2005. This could be the year as Fierceness starts from here as the Kentucky Derby favorite.
