Houston is a -4 road dog against UTSA in Week 1.   The power ratings have Houston (46) at 75.27 and UTSA (91) 65.39.  Gambling 911 arrives at a spread of Houston -8, indicating a 4-point overlay.  Oddsmakers have the Cougars winning OVER 9 regular season games in 2022 and Gambling 911 even sees a scenario where Houston can go undefeated.

Houston vs. UTSA Betting Preview (September 3)

It’s indeed possible Houston is caught looking ahead to the Week 2 game versus Texas Tech, a team that has the potential to be a home favorite, though Gambling 911 had an early line of Houston -1.

The line movement in Week 1 is from Houston -5.5 to -4.  75% to 80% of the action though was on the Cougars.  Things that make you go “hmmmmm”.  Again, one has to wonder if Houston will be caught looking ahead to next week.

Houston will enter this game with what should be a strong defensive front and secondary but there are question marks regarding this year’s offense and its consistency.  QB Clayton Tune will enter this game with some solid receiving corps.

Tune threw for over 300 yards in three of his final six games in the 2021 regular season.

UTSA we expect to be solid on both sides of the ball but must improve its secondary as they allowed 258 yards per game last season.

Still, this is a team favored to win OVER 8 regular season games in 2022.   They have five winning seasons and three bowl appearances in modern times.

The Roadrunners have veterans and will come into this game with four starters returning on the offensive front.  They include QB Frank Harris.

He completed 22-of-36 passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a 38-24 loss to San Diego State in last season’s Miami Beach Bowl.

Also pay attention to running back transfer Trelon Smith Sr., who averaged over 1,300 rushing yards in 2020 and 2021 for the Razorbacks.

As an underdog, UTSA is 23-59 (28%).  They had just two losses last season (to UNT and SDSU in the bowl game).
