Rep. Sean Eberhart has pleaded guilty to federal charges accusing him of taking a $350k salary from Spectacle Gaming in exchange for support of HEA 1015, the legislation that resulted in Indiana becoming one of the first states to regulate sports betting following a 2018 SCOTUS ruling that abolished prior prohibition (The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act or PASPA). The salary is considered akin to taking a bribe.
As a result, online casino gambling legislature introduction is ruled out for 2024. Both House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) and Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) agreed the fallout makes such considerations impossible.
The plea agreement does not include a specific sentence for Eberhart. Federal sentencing guidelines for the offense level are between 37 and 46 months. He will also be required to pay $60,000 in restitution, which was his legislative salary.
