Consensus Cappers Way Off Going Against Dodgers May 1

(May 2, 2023) - Sports handicappers had their focus on the Cubs-Nationals game Monday evening, but the consensus was that they were all split on which team might win here.

The Phillies-Dodgers game is a different story with top MLB cappers all over Philadelphia Monday evening at +145.

Both teams have winning records with Philadelphia one game above the .500 mark and the Dodgers starting to get their act together following a sluggish start to the season with a 16-13 record.  Both clubs have won seven of their last ten games overall.

The Phillies are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Los Angeles, which doesn't mean a whole lot.  But they are also 6-1 in their last 7 vs. National League West.

Taijuan Walker is the starting pitcher for Philadelphia Monday night.  He is 2-1 with a 4.97 ERA.  Walker threw a bullpen session without issue on Friday after injuring his forearm against the Mariners last Wednesday.  He had previously pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball for a victory over the White Sox.

Los Angeles Dodgers career statistics vs. Taijuan Walker are 18 for 74 at bats (.243) with three home runs.   Mookie Betts is 5 for 10 against him. Freddie Freeman is just 2 for 16, one of which was a homer.

Tony Gonsolin starts for LA.  Tony Gonsolin hurled 3 1/3 scoreless innings on Wednesday in his season debut against the Pirates.

Cubs-Dodgers Series

(April 14, 2023) - The Dodgers have gone 10-0 in the last ten meetings versus the Chicago Cubs.   Prior to this time, Chicago had better luck versus LA but Chicago has only won four games on the road in Los Angeles versus the Dodgers since 2018.  They are 2-10 in the last 12 games played in LA.

The Under is 10-2-1 in Cubs last 13 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game and 12-3-1 in Cubs last 16 vs. National League West.

The Under is 5-0-1 in Dodgers last 6 games following a win and 5-1-1 in Dodgers last 7 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.

The Cubs are 9-1 in their last 10 vs. a team with a winning record, 8-2 in their last 10 after scoring 2 runs or less in their previous game and 13-3 in their last 16 Friday games.

The Dodgers are 40-13 in their last 53 home games vs. a left-handed starter.

The -165 Day 1 opening line is not bad all things considered. The Chicago Cubs career statistics vs. Noah Syndergaard are just .172 (11 of 64 at bats).  Dansby Swanson has been pretty good against Syndergaard, going 8 of 20 at bats, so definitely expect him to get a hit or two Friday night.

Though a much smaller sampling, Justin Steele has only allowed two hits off of sixteen at bats versus Dodgers players.

Julio Urias starts Sunday and is the one bright spot for a Dodgers team that has gotten off to a slow start.  He's 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA and Cubs batters are just .205 against him (9 hits on 44 at bats).  They have just one home run and a single RBI versus Urias.

The Cubs Sunday slated starter, Drew Smyly, has allowed 23 hits on 85 at bats (.271) versus the Dodgers.  That number includes six home runs.

We'll likely have a high price on LA in this one though.
