Maxxilabs Brings Six Creative Identities to iGaming Game Development for Crypto Casinos

Maxxilabs came to market on September 1 with six game studios, where most new suppliers have one. The Maxxilabs studios are Bad Company, Fortune One, Gacha, Red Papaya, Slotty and Ventura Studios, and operators get all six through one integration. Each studio keeps its own math and its own art, while Maxxilabs handles the integration and the distribution, which is the unglamorous half.

For crypto casinos, where operators often look for varied game content that can be added without building separate integrations for every supplier, this kind of multi-studio model can be particularly relevant.

Some context for US readers. Online casinos are live in seven states, which brought in a record $10.73 billion between them last year, according to the American Gaming Association. That list isn't growing quickly. Hawaii couldn't get a sports betting bill through this year, never mind casinos. Maxxilabs hasn't said which regulated markets its games are approved for. That's the first thing a US operator will ask, since operators in those states can only take games that have been through the state's approval process.

The Six

Bad Company is the one with a game already out under its name. The studio was founded this year by a team with more than a decade in the business, according to the company, and it's a high-volatility slot shop. Its Mad Ducks was the headline launch title and went into wider release on September 30. It uses mystery symbols and multipliers that grow across spins.

Slotty is the unusual one. It reworks games whose math has already performed, changing the art and sound, with room to adjust them for different markets. It's the least glamorous job description of the six and probably the most common in the business. Its first dated title on the Maxxilabs site is Turkeys Gone Wild, due October 28.

That leaves four.

Gacha is the brand's studio. Its slots run on cluster pays, where wins come from groups of matching symbols instead of lines, and it's credited with the Link&Merge mechanic. Its Whale Rush is dated for late November.

Red Papaya calls itself data-driven, lists mechanics including Triple Pot and Bonus Tower, and has Genie's Fortune Wishes scheduled for October 21.

Fortune One's thing is art direction, which is hard to judge until there's a game to look at.

Ventura Studios has paytable-free mechanics and artwork built on the kitsune, a fox spirit from Japanese folklore, and is going for broad market reach. Neither of those two has a game credited to it on the public schedule yet.

Why Six and Not One

Most suppliers sell a house style. Maxxilabs is selling the lack of one, and betting an operator would rather take six kinds of games from one supplier than six versions of the same game. Slot lobbies are long and a lot of what's in them is hard to tell apart, so you can see the appeal. A lobby needs a few different kinds of games to keep different players around, and most suppliers are known for one.

The launch content has been pitched at crypto and streaming audiences as well as traditional casino players. For crypto casinos looking to differentiate their lobbies, a varied catalogue can offer an alternative to relying on a narrow range of familiar slot formats. The money side is simpler. Every studio that wants to reach operators needs an integration and a back end. Six studios paying for that separately would be paying for the same thing six times. Sharing it lets them stay small.

Maxxilabs says the group will release six to eight new casino games a month across slots and casual games, the quick, simple titles that sit next to slots in a lobby. Its public schedule currently shows 11 titles, several of them not due until late November or December.

There's a promotions tool called Rewards on the shared side. The catalog isn't all slots. It lists a crash game, AviaX, and an arcade-style shooter dated for November.

What Operators Get

One integration and several kinds of content, without signing six suppliers. That's assuming the integration is as simple as advertised, which operators will find out for themselves. Whether six studios really means six kinds of games is something they can only judge by playing them, and only a handful are out so far.

It also depends what an operator is short of. A sportsbook-led brand with a thin casino tab has different gaps to fill than a casino-first site that already carries thousands of slots.

What they don't get yet is any history. The collective launched in September and there are no performance numbers to look at.

The Hard Part

The company says more independent studios will join. It hasn't named any or said when.

The first six were presumably picked so they wouldn't overlap. A seventh has to be different from the rest of the market and from the six already inside, and it gets harder with each one after that. At some point a collective either starts turning studios away or starts to look like every other big catalog.

There's a second problem, which is success. When one studio's games do far better than the others', the easy move is to ask everybody to make more of that. Six identities can turn into one pretty quickly that way.

What to Watch

October 21 and October 28. Genie's Fortune Wishes and Turkeys Gone Wild come from two different studios, and with Mad Ducks already out that makes three games from three teams inside two months. After that the site has Whale Rush and the shooter, Cluck Hunt, scheduled for November 25. The October pair is the first chance to see whether Red Papaya and Slotty play as differently as they're described.
