Mississippi School Hit By Gambling Scandal

STARKVILLE, Miss (Gambling911.com) - Two Mississippi State football players were found to have gambled on sports against NCAA rules.

Sam Sklar of The Clarion Ledger broke the news  Wednesday that the individuals placed small wagers on this year's Super Bowl and NBA All-Star weekend using a prediction market app.

Both players names were redacted and received only minor penalties, according to documents obtained by The Clarion.

ProhiBet, a tool used by the NCAA to monitor sports betting, alerted Mississippi State on Feb. 8, the same day as the Super Bowl, that an athlete had placed a $50 Super Bowl wager on Kalshi.

The second football player was caught one week later betting on the NBA All-Star Game and 3-point contest using Kalshi. ProhiBet alerted MSU on Feb. 15, one day after the 3-point contest and the same day as the All-Star Game.

The state of Mississippi was among the first to begin regulating sports betting following a U.S. Supreme Court decision to abolish the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in May 2018.  Mississippi does not permit online sports gambling however.   Bets must be placed at land-based casino sportsbooks located in Biloxi, Tunica and four other cities.

Kalshi is not licensed by Mississippi regulators.  Instead, the company is licensed federally by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).  A number of states have engaged in contentious legal battles with Kalshi to prevent the company from operating in their respective jurisdictions.   Mississippi is not among the states that have taken action against Kalshi.

Both student players were in violation of NCAA bylaw 10.3, which prohibits sports wagering for athletes, staff members and conference employees.

Two other non-gambling related violations were reported by the university in 2026. One of them was in the football program when an assistant coach co-signed an apartment lease for a player. The men's track and field team also reported a violation for providing two meals to a recruit's girlfriend while on an official visit.
