The AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award has been in existence for exactly a dozen years, establishing itself as a highly prestigious honor for top coordinators.
Interestingly, 11 of the 12 historical winners have gone on to be—or had already been—NFL head coaches, with former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman standing as the lone exception. Prominent head coaching names like Kyle Shanahan, DeMeco Ryans and Ben Johnson headline previous winners.
A few other trends stand out: no single franchise has ever produced more than one winner, and the award has been split perfectly down the middle between offensive and defensive minds.
Now, the oddsmakers at BetOnline Sports & Casino have released the opening lines for this year’s honor. A clear frontrunner has already emerged, and the top three names on the betting board are all seasoned former NFL head coaches looking to capture the hardware in their coordinator roles.
