Five players suspended for violating the league's gambling policy last year have been reinstated by the NFL.

Those players reinstated are: Wide receiver Quintez Cephus, safety C.J. Moore, defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor, linebacker Rashod Berry and defensive end Shaka Toney.  Each of the players were suspended for the entire 2023 season.

First-time offenders betting on non-NFL games are subject to a two-game suspension without pay.  First-time offenders found to have bet on NFL games are subject to an indefinite suspension of a minimum of one year.

In April 2023, Cephus and Toney were suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season. Two months later, Berry was also alleged to have wagered on NFL games.

Toney is under contract with the Commanders while the rest of the players are free agents who were all cut by the Detroit Lions last season following the allegations.

This news comes one day after the NBA this week banned one of its players, Jontay Porter, after he was alleged to have provided a high stakes sports bettor with injury information that had yet to be made public.

And Major League Baseball has been dealing with its own gambling scandal involving the former interpreter of LA Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani.  The interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, is accused of stealing $4.5 million to cover his illegal gambling debts with a Southern California bookie.
