GOAT Map Before, After Super Bowl LIX
The maps below are based on geotagged Twitter (X) data from two weeks prior to Super Bowl LIX through 48 hours after the big game.
The study conducted by BetOnline.ag tracked tweets, hashtags and direct keyword phrases about who is the NFL's GOAT.
For example, the team compiled tweets with "Tom Brady is the GOAT," "Tom Brady is still the GOAT," "Tom Brady is the greatest of all time," "Tom Brady #GOAT," etc. and compared them against tweets that contained stuff like "Patrick Mahomes is the GOAT" "Mahomes will be the GOAT," "Patrick Mahomes #GOAT," "Mahomes is still my GOAT," etc.
More than 130,000 tweets were tracked in total, and whichever player had the most GOAT-supportive tweets subsequently "won" that state.
As you can see from the infomaps, Patrick Mahomes was GOAT to about a fifth of the country before Super Bowl LIX. Tom Brady still had a vast majority of "votes," but the conversation of whether or not Mahomes would take over the GOAT title were definitely on the rise.
Of course, Mahomes turned in one of the worst performances of his career and the Chiefs were demolished in LIX. And, as you can see from the map, this quickly put an end (for now) to the GOAT comparisons. Mahomes even lost the state of Kansas...yikes!
Before Super Bowl LIX:
Mahomes is the GOAT - 10 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington)
Brady is the GOAT - 40 states (rest of states)
After Super Bowl LIX:
Mahomes is the GOAT - 2 states (Missouri, Nebraska)
Brady is the GOAT - 48 states (rest of states)
