A Catholic nun and former vice president of finance at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, has been accused of embezzling more that $1.2 million to support her gambling habit.
Sister Marie Thornton is charged with sending phone invoices to the school in order to pay off personal credit card bills and expenses, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The thefts reportedly occurred over a 10-year period between 1999 and 2009.
Thornton entered a “no guilty” plea to a federal embezzlement charge.
The college itself has come under fire for failing to report missing funds. It only alluded to Sister Marie Thornton’s activities in its 2009 tax filing send in February to the IRS. New financial oversight controls have been put in place since.
