The wife of Massachusetts Representative John Tierney is about to learn her fate in a case involving online gambling and the filing of false tax returns.
Patrice Tierney is scheduled to be sentenced today (Thursday, January 13, 2011). She was charged with four counts of aiding and abetting the filing of false tax returns related to her fugitive brother, Robert Eremian, and his Antigua-based business Sports Off Shore (also known as PlayLegal.com). Under a plea agreement, prosecutors will ask that Ms. Tierney be placed on probation for two years, including two months of home confinement.
Robert Eremian (or Bobby) had once been apprehended in 2000 on the island of Antigua by US authorities for tax evasion. More recently Eremian was indicted for racketeering, money laundering and the operation of his Antiguan sports betting operation, first established in 1996. The license for his business was revoked in October of last year.
"I take full responsibility for what my part in this was," Patrice Tierney told Judge William G. Young.
She was later released on personal recognizance and must face a sentencing hearing January 13.
Patrice was charged just weeks prior to her husband being re-elected to another term in office. Her activities were brought up by Tierney’s opponent during a hotly contested debate and used against him during the waning weeks of the election campaign.
