February 24 is the date that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has to sign a bill that would legalize Internet gambling in that state. Online poker, sports betting and casino games would all be legalized and licensed out of Atlantic City.
Christie could also elect to veto the bill by that date. He has yet to express his intent at this time. Failure to act will result in the bill automatically becoming law.
Should the law go into effect, New Jersey would become the first state in the US to legalize online gambling for its nearly 9 million residents.
State Senator Raymond Lesniak is behind the legislation.
Regarding a recent upswing in Justice Department prosecutions for online gambling offenses, Lesniak told Gambling911.com’s own Jenny Woo “The Justice Department doesn't have any authority over Internet Gaming that is exclusively intrastate. The very sophisticated software (that will be developed) is to ensure that only New Jersey residents will be able to gamble and that the signal that the Internet site be located in New Jersey as well and that precludes any federal authority from intervening.”
