Tiger Woods still the favorite at WGC event
The first World Golf Championships event of the 2011 PGA season tees off Wednesday with the Accenture Match Play Championship at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona.
World No. 3 Tiger Woods will be looking for his first win since 2009 and to better his 44th-place finish in his only other tournament so far this season, the Farmers Insurance Open.
But Woods is still the favorite in Golf Odds at betED.com, at +900, although there are a bunch of players right behind him.
World No. 2 Martin Kaymer and the 6th-ranked Paul Casey are both at +1000, while No. 7 Rory McIlroy is at +1300 and World No. 1 Lee Westwood and No. 5 Phil Mickelson are both at +1500.
This event was not kind to Americans last year, as no U.S. golfer made the final four, which was made up of England’s Ian Poulter, the eventual winner, and Casey, Colombian Camilo Villegas, and Spain’s Sergio Garcia.
Poulter opened last year’s tournament with a win over Justin Leonard in a match that went to the 19th hole, and went on to defeat Adam Scott, Jeev Milkha Singh, and Thongchai Jaidee, before beating Garcia in the semifinals and Casey in the finals.
This year’s Accenture Match Play Championship will see a change in format, as the final match will be just 18 holes.
Woods has won the tournament three times, including back-to-back in 2003-04.
Golf bettors can catch the event on the Golf Channel Wednesday through Friday, and then on NBC Saturday and Sunday.
