A total of $227,000 was reportedly contributed to the mid-term election campaigns of 68 Nevada candidates, the Las Vegas Review-Journal claimed on Saturday.

PokerStars and two other online poker rooms were shut down by US federal authorities for money laundering and fraud, among other charges.

State lawmaker and former U.S. attorney in Nevada Sen. Greg Brower called for federal and state investigations into the political activities of PokerStars.

"The fact that a foreign company which has been charged with operating a criminal enterprise could play such a large role in Nevada campaigns is troubling," Bower said. "I will be discussing this matter with both the U.S. Department of Justice and the Nevada enforcement authorities to determine whether federal and state investigations into PokerStars' activities in Nevada are warranted."

The contributions, made between Sept. 23 and Oct. 18, ranged from $1,000 to $10,000.
