David Einhorn has become a minority owner in the New York Mets.  He’s also a big name poker player who has won $660,000 at the 2006 World Series of Poker.  And that was an 18th place finish.  Don’t count on an 18th place finish to yield that type of dough at this year’s event as Gambling911.com doesn’t anticipate a whole lot of poker players able to afford the big buy-in following the April 15 US Government seizure of online poker accounts.  US Players also can no longer access what were once three of the largest Internet poker rooms on the Net:  PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and UB.com.

But getting back to Mr. Einhorn, the “evil” game of poker was going to permit the new Mets minority owner an opportunity to donate up to $12 million to charity had he won that year’s event outright.  Einhorn announced his intentions prior to the WSOP and ultimately he did donate the $660,000 in winnings to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Sadly the actions taken by the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York and recent sting operation by the US Attorney’s Office out of Baltimore will result in reducing these charitable efforts as the pros are now making a mass exodus out of the US.

Einhorn won’t be leaving any time soon and we can all be thankful for that.  And, yes, he’s probably just the type of person we need to help the Mets improve as a team.
