It’s the 4th of July Weekend in the United States and that can only mean fireworks, barbeques, spending the weekend at the beach with friends and family and, of course, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The event kicks off at 12 pm EDT on ESPN and has attracted solid viewership ratings in recent years.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2011 betting odds had Joey Chestnut as the favorite at 1 to 4 odds at BetUS.

Last year, reigning champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut managed to gulp down 54 hot dogs in ten minutes in 2010.

"I admit it. I coasted a little last year. When I saw no one was close, I slowed down a little to make sure the dogs would stay down," Chestnut said. "I can't tell you all my secrets to how I can eat so many. Someone out there might copy it. But I will tell you this: The night before the competition, I sleep only four hours. That means when I actually do eat, my stomach will want to digest the food quicker."

This year his main competition, Takeru Kobayashi at 2/1 odds, remains in exile.  Somehow the folks at BetUS.com believe he will find a way back into the competition last minute, but that seems doubtful as of Sunday.

Kobayashi had been the dominant figure in competitive eating prior to Chestnut’s arrival a few years back, having won six consecutive Nathan's Famous titles between 2001 and 2006.

Last year, Kobayashi was arrested following last year’s event after crashing the stage.  The 32-year-old Japanese hot dog eater did not participate after refusing to sign a contract with Major League Eating.

“There’s a contract dispute, so they weren’t giving him his freedom,” said Kobayashi’s interpreter, Maggie James, said at the time.

That dispute continues.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2011 betting odds were available on the following contestants to win:  Tim Eater X Janus 10/1, Pat Bertoletti  20/1, Bob Shoudt  30/1, Sonya Thomas 40/1, Hall Hunt 50/1, Juliet Lee  50/1, Erik Denmark  50/1, Gravy Brown 60/1, Badlands Booker 60/1, Jim Reeves 50/1, Crazy Legs Conti,60/1, Pete Davekos  60/1, Sean Gordon 60/1, Marco Marquez  80/1, Micah Collins 80/1, Franco Camerini 80/1, Bob Coccodrili 100/1.

Meanwhile, the OVER/UNDER on the number of hot dogs Chestnut will eat was set at 67.5!
