The Philadelphia Phillies Win World Series and Payout Was Still Sweet

A lot of the talk heading into the World Series was the chance for Tampa Bay Rays bettors (assuming there were some) to win big if their team walked away with a championship.  After all, the Rays were +6500 long shots to win the 2008 World Series heading into the season.  The payout would have been $6500 for every $100 bet.

Ultimately, it was the Philadelphia Phillies who won the series and gamblers also cashed out, albeit not for $6500.

Bookmaker.com, the oldest established online sportsbook catering to the North American gambler, had Philadelphia paying $1400 for every $100 bet early on in the season.  Those odds were locked.

After waiting 46 hours due to heavy rains, the Phillies and Rays wasted little time scoring runs Wednesday night as Game 5 resumed in Philadelphia. The Phillies scored in the sixth and seventh innings to lead 4-3, offsetting Rocco Baldelli's solo HR in the seventh.

Any gamblers who had the Phillies winning Monday night's game were paid their bets despite the tie due to a rule few people knew about whereby such a scenario reverts back to the last inning's lead.
