The state of Massachusetts joins New Jersey, Nevada, California, Iowa and Florida in a quest to offer legalized Internet poker to its residents.

A plan proposed by Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) would allow for up to five licensees with model legislation and regulations to be set up by July 1, 2012 as part of the state’s gambling expansion agenda.

Winslow claims his proposal will create high tech jobs and generate revenue for the state beyond collections anticipated from the core ingredients of the House expanded gambling bill: three casinos and one slot machine venue.

The House is set to begin its gambling debate on Wednesday.

Massachusetts has a total population of 6.5 million people or approximately 1 million more the population of two of the world’s largest poker playing hotspots of Denmark and Finland.
