He’s come close twice before, and veteran Juan Manuel Marquez is set to give Manny Pacquiao all he can handle when the fighters meet at for a welterweight title bout on Saturday night.
Marquez has pushed the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter to the limit twice, battling back from three first-round knockouts to salvage a draw in a 2004 featherweight fight. Marquez also dropped a split decision to Pacquiao in a 2008 super featherweight bout. The veteran came out slow both times before finishing strong. One of the smartest fighters in the world, he should be prepared with the necessary adjustments this time around.
In their second fight, Marquez looked finished after suffering a brutal third-round knockdown. But after absorbing the punishment, he came back and won the majority of the final nine rounds. The big question is how Marquez will fight at 140 pounds. The 38-year-old’s only other welterweight fight didn’t go well, a unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2009.
Pacquiao has cruised since his last win over Marquez, going 7-0 with four knockouts and three unanimous decisions. He had little trouble with the aging Shane Mosley in his last bout in May. While he couldn’t finish off Mosley, he dominated 12 rounds and easily won a unanimous decision marred only by an erroneously ruled knockdown (Mosley clearly shoved Pacquiao to the mat).
Pacquiao’s power did Marquez in early in their first two fights, but Marquez has controlled the middle and later rounds. Marquez may simply have to figure out a way to survive early if he’s to win this one.
