Round 2 of the NBA playoffs is here and the first game on tap for fans is the opener between #8 Philadelphia and #5 Boston. Both teams managed to pull off the “upset” in Round 1 but both were helped when the injury bug really decimated their opponents. Now they meet with a date in the Eastern Conference finals on the line.

Game 1 line and Total: Boston -5 and 170

Both teams are coming off gruelling defensive series that saw multiple games fail to reach close to 170 points. But this series might open up a bit more as they finished all three of their meetings this season with at least 174 points. The home team was 3-0 SU and ATS in those games as each time they won by double digits. The playoffs are a different beast though and seeing many games in this series decided by double digits won’t happen.

Philly used their strong defensive play to stifle the Bulls in the remainder of that series, but we all know if Chicago had Derrick Rose involved, things likely would have been different. Offensively though, Philly has to be someone concerned for this series as they didn’t crack the 80-point plateau in either of their last two games and were held to 79 in their lone loss to the Celtics. But, neither team wants to bog down defensively in this opener after the series they just had and since each winner between these two scored at least 99 points this year, chances are we see some offense in this one.

The hatred of the playoffs has yet to fester in this series, although it likely will only take a Game or two to overheat. However, Boston showed in the Atlanta series that they are a better scoring team at home (avg of 91.3 in home games) than on the road and Philly did have their two highest scoring games of Round 1 on the road in Games 1 and 2 (avg of 100). Once the hate began to grow in those respective series we saw the defenses clamp down and playoff basketball at its finest. Until then though, it is time to jump on the over here as this number appears to be low.

Take the over.
