Fresh off another Subway Series win, the Yankees look to continue their red-hot June when the Indians come to the Bronx to open a three-game set on Monday.
New York is 16-5 this month and seems to have a clear pitching edge in this one, as Hiroki Kuroda (6-7, 3.57 ERA) is 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA over his past five starts, while Cleveland righty Josh Tomlin (3-4, 5.12 ERA) has struggled since returning from a wrist injury, posting a 5.65 ERA over five starts since coming off the disabled list. But the Indians have managed to win three of Tomin’s four road starts this year, and he was solid at home against the Reds last Tuesday, throwing 6.2 innings of one-run ball. And Cleveland has been excellent against right-handed pitching all year. They’re only 5-15 against lefty starters, but 32-19 against righties with a .337 team on-base percentage against them, second in the A.L. behind only Texas.
Kuroda hasn’t received much run support this year including in his last start, a home loss to Atlanta on Tuesday. He allowed four runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings in a 4-3 loss. Despite a solid ERA, the Yankees are just 6-8 in his starts. Kuroda been slightly better at home, where he’s 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA (the Yankees are 4-3 in those starts). This will be his first career start against the Indians.
While their bats have come on a bit of late, the Yankee offense has been surprisingly mediocre at home this year. Since opening the new Yankee Stadium in 2009, they’ve averaged 5.68, 5.84 and 5.81 runs per game at home. This year, they’re averaging just 4.53 in the Bronx.
Tomlin went 12-7 with a 4.25 ERA last year, and after a slow start to 2012 he started to look more like himself in beating the Reds at home on Tuesday. He’s made quality starts in three of his four road starts this year, going 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA, but he did get torched in his last road start, allowing six runs and 12 base runners over four innings at Cincinnati on June 14.
Tomlin has made three career starts against the Yankees, beating them twice at home (while allowing three runs over 14 innings). But he was hit hard in his only Yankee Stadium start, allowing six runs and 12 hits over five innings in a loss last June.<P>
The Indians are a solid 17-16 on the road this season.
