These are some of the earliest events taking place at the Olympics and among the most popular.
- Men's 400m Individual Medley – Matt Grevers was getting the most betting action at +115 odds. Grevers, who will represent the USA, happens to have dual citizenship from the Netherlands. He was actually tempted to represent the Dutch team.
“The U.S. team is the most competitive team in the world, and in 2004 I knew I couldn't make it, so I had been in touch with the Dutch team to feel out my options for competing in Athens. But my times weren't good enough for them either — it's still a very competitive team. By the time of the Beijing games in 2008, I knew it was Team USA or nothing. I was feeling very patriotic about it by then. I felt that if I couldn't compete for the U.S., then I just wasn't going to the Olympics.”
Camille Lacourt is a slight EVEN odds favorite. He is representing France.

- Men's 400m Freestyle – Sun Yang at -125 odds, Peter Vanderkaay at 30/1 and Ryan Cochrane at 30/1 were getting split betting action for this event early on. Yang is a huge -500 favorite to win the gold for China at the 1500m Freestyle.
