Jonathan Aguiar’s first ever World Series of Poker bracelet win did not come without some controversy as Brandon Cantu has claimed he “was robbed”.

Cantu was the runner up in Event 5: Mixed Match No Hold’em that concluded later than originally expected.

“It’s the most robbed I’ve ever been,” Cantu said during an interview with PokerNews.com following the event.  “In fact, it’s the one time I can say I’ve ever been robbed in a tournament.  What the World Series (of Poker) did to reschedule (the event) and do everything under his terms and conditions (they) pretty much gave him the tournament.”

Cantu made reference to the scheduling conflict.  The WSOP noted that the tournament was originally scheduled as a three-day affair but it became necessary to extend the conclusion to an unscheduled fourth day.

From the WSOP.com:

The problem was – the WSOP Europe Main Event was to begin on what would have been the fourth day.  And so, the two finalists agreed to postpone the last stages of the heads-up match until two days later.  Hence, this was one of the very few non-Main Events in history ever to span six combined days.

A grueling five-hour head-to-head match between Cantu and Aguiar was forcibly suspended at 5 am, due to French law requiring gaming to end at the morning hour.

The end eventually came about an hour into the resumption of play when Aguiar won a race holding A-K suited versus Cantus pocket deuces.  An ace flopped, ultimately giving Aguiar the victory, the WSOP reported.

“I wanted to play on (at the end of day three)….He (Aguiar) had no chance to win since he was worn out, but the postponement gave him time to come back and be fresh today.”

Cantu eventually stormed out of the interview.
