One online bookmaker was quick to offer odds on who will be named the next Pope to succeed retiring Pope Benedict

With the shock announcement Monday that Pope Benedict is retiring, Irish bookmaker Paddy Power was quick to release odds on who will succeed him.  He is the first Pope in 600 years to resign.  The last one to do so was Pope Gregory XII.

No suprise Paddy is among the first to offer these odds.  They were, after all, the first bookmaker to sponsor a confessional.  Oy Vey!

Benedict called his choice "a decision of great importance for the life of the church."

Paddy has the favourite being Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana at 3/1 followed closely by Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Canada at 7/2 odds.

Cardinal Turkson played down his favourite status, telling the BBC statistics will not play a role in selection of the next Pope.

"It doesn't go by representation... those type of considerations tend to muddy the water."

Turkson, if selected, would become the first Black Pope.

Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria had odds of 9/2 with Cardinal Leonardo Sandri of Argentina at 6/1.

Yes, there were even odds on Father Dougal Maguire of the Craggy Islands to become next Pope at 1000/1 odds.  Google it!

The new Pope should be named by Mid-March.
