Black Onyx drew the dreaded number one position.  It has been a quarter of a century since a horse drawn on the rails has won the mile and a quarter (2000 metres) race.  His odds were listed at 65/1.

Orb, now the favorite, drew the number 16 post position.

"It was a great post position. We got everything we wanted," said trainer Todd Pletcher, who has five horses entered in the race, including Verrazano.

Dreaded may not always apply as the number one post position has produced 12 winners in the history of the Kentucky Derby.

The number 4 post position draw also has tremendous value.

The No. 4 gate is a great draw for talented stalkers and speedsters alike.

Thoroughbreds that prefer to hang back and wait until the stretch to strike will be elated if they are gifted this post position, while wire-to-wire runners have the space required to forge ahead of the pack.

If a contender such as Revolutionary—and jockey Calvin Borel—is able to start at this gate and have an easy path to the rail, it’s going to be much easier to win.

Post position 5 has produced the most Kentucky Derby winners to date.
