*Michael Phelps Makes WSOP Debut - According to Card Player, Phelps bought into a $5,000 no-limit hold ‘em tournament at the WSOP on Wednesday.
“It’s kind of weird,” Phelps told Card Player. “I wasn’t even going to play today. I just wanted to come over and see everything and somehow these guys talked me into playing. Antonio [Esfandiari] and JG (Jeff Gross) told me we should just throw in a buy-in and see what happens at your first World Series event.”
*Sentencing News for Reputed Philly Mobster Joseph “Mousie” Massimino – Reputed mobster Joseph Massimino was one of three men convicted of racketeering conspiracy, and given his criminal history, the 63-year-old could get whacked fairly hard by U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno.
His lawyer, Joseph Santaguida, fired the first broadside in that battle this week, arguing in a memo to the judge that Massimino deserves between 57 and 71 months in prison, a punishment in line with the 57 months reputed capo Martin "Marty" Angelina got last fall after pleading guilty to the same conspiracy.
*Real Madrid Ends Shirt Deal With Bwin.Party – Emirites Airlines has secured a new 4-year $160m shirt sponsorship deal with Real Madrid while Bwin.Party has been reduced to an “online digital partner” after its 7-year shirt deal came to an end this month.
*Groundbreaking Racino in Austintown, Ohio - AUSTINTOWN (AP) - A ceremonial groundbreaking will get the ball rolling today on the state's newest gambling venture.
Ground will be broken here this afternoon for a $125 million horse racetrack and video slot racino. Infrastructure work has been ongoing at the site.
Penn National Gaming, which operates casinos in Columbus and Toledo, is building the racino. Ohio also has casinos in Cincinnati and Cleveland.
Seven racinos are planned in Ohio, where new rules allow horse tracks to add slots-like gambling.
