Latest California Online Poker Bill Bows to the Tribes: Time Running Out

One cannot fault California state Sen. Lou Correa, D-Santa Ana, for trying as he introduced the umpteenth reincarnation of an intrastate online poker bill.

Previous attempts of legalizing Web poker in the state have failed due to opposition from California’s powerful tribal casinos.

His latest effort stipulates that that online poker licenses will only be granted to those card clubs and American Indian tribes that already offer gambling in the state.

There have been no hearings on Wright’s latest legislation nor does it specify the cost of obtaining a license.

The tribes themselves have been crafting their own legislation.

But with only three weeks left before lawmakers adjourn for the year Sept. 13, it looks highly unlikely any such legislation will be pushed through during this year's session.
