ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - (Associated Press) -- A Maryland casino will hold a job fair next week for soon-to-be laid-off workers at Atlantic City's Atlantic Club Casino Hotel.
Maryland Live! will interview employees of the Atlantic Club who will lose their jobs when it closes Jan. 13. The casino has more than 100 openings across all departments, and says it will eventually need even more workers than that.
The Atlantic Club was sold last month in a bankruptcy auction to two competitors, Tropicana Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment, who will strip it for parts and shut it. About 1,600 workers are losing their jobs.
"The closing of the Atlantic Club is an unfortunate event that impacts many peoples' lives," said Rob Norton, president and general manager of Maryland Live! "In this case, however, we have the opportunity to offset some of the job losses, as we are currently hiring to accommodate our growth. This is an opportunity for us to target a qualified pool of candidates from our industry within the same geographic region."
He said the casino is "seeking to fill hundreds of jobs across all departments," including table games dealers, slot attendants, food and beverage servers, security and other job categories.
Maryland Live! is located at the Arundel Mills Mall, halfway between Baltimore and Washington in Hanover, Md.
The Atlantic Club will be closed and its assets distributed between its two purchasers. Tropicana will take the table games, slot machines and customer lists, while Caesars will get the 801-room hotel.
They are paying a combined $23.4 million for the Atlantic Club, but neither has an interest in operating it in the shrinking Atlantic City market. After Jan. 13, Atlantic City will have 11 casinos.
A deal to sell the Atlantic Club to the PokerStars web site for $15 million fell apart in April, and the casino was unable to find another purchaser before filing for bankruptcy in November.
