Costa Rica is definitely the feel good story of this year’s World Cup. And there will likely be a handful of sports bettors feeling especially good should this Central American team advance and somehow find a way to win.
They were the biggest long shot at the start of the competition and today, after advancing to the quarter-finals, Costa Rica was listed at 60-1 odds for a payout potential of US$6000 on a US$100 bet.
This will be the Ticos first appearance in the World Cup semi-finals.
"For a long time, I've worked in a very humble way so that I can do things for the benefit of my team, wherever I play," Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas said. "I'm very pleased with all the people who reward my work and give me words of encouragement. I'm very grateful to my family, to my wife's family. I believe that they're all very important in my life."
Navas was credited with a La Liga-best 160 saves for Levante during his most recent club season.
Costa Rica has a tough task ahead of them as they look to play mighty Holland, a team that was one of the favorites to win this year’s World Cup and so far haven’t disappointed.
There is hope, however, as the Netherlands had to come from behind to win in extra time against Mexico this past weekend.
And it all could come down to Navas.
"I believe he's one of best goalkeepers in the world," Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto said. "We trusted Navas during the penalties."
