Argentina

Messi was stifled for much of their 1-0 win over Switzerland, as was most of the team, but he was the provider for Angel Di Maria’s winner in the 118th minute. Di Maria should get a ton of credit as he always looked like he was going to step up and help his captain, and he had 12 shots in total, putting 10 on target. But Messi had one more trick up his sleeve to get the ball to Di Maria after he was shadowed by two or three Swiss players each time he got the ball, and now Argentina is in the quarterfinals for the third World Cup in a row. Considering all the pressure they are under with the tournament being held in South America on the soil of their rivals from Brazil, can they take the next step?

Belgium

Belgium should have had their round of 16 game with the United States wrapped up, but they ran into a hot keeper in Tim Howard. Still, extra-time goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku sent Belgium into the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win and this is their first time here since 1986, when they lost to Argentina in the semifinals. Belgium was a darkhorse that so many people jumped on that they became overrated, and those expectations took their toll in the group stage, although they managed to win all three games. They played better against the Americans, but they’ll need to find another gear against the Argentineans.
