The Major League Baseball Home Run Derby is held each year the day before the MLB All-Star Game. The contest features some of the top home run hitters in the league competing against each other in an event that is televised by ESPN.
The 20th annual Gillette Home Run Derby takes place on Monday, July 14th at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a start time of 8 pm Eastern Time on ESPN. The 2014 Home Run Derby will feature a new bracket style format which means the ten players will be split up into five for each league.
The captains for the 2014 Home Run Derby are Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies for the National League. They will each pick four players from their respective leagues to join them in the contest.
New Format
The new format for the Home Run Derby will feature 10 players with 5 from each league competing. Each player will get seven outs per round with bracketed play after the first round. There will be five players from each league in the opening round with each player getting seven outs. The player who hits the most home runs in each league gets a bye to the semifinals. The next two players with the most home runs in each league will match up against each other in the second round. Those two winners will then compete against the top seed in each league. The final round will feature those winners going head-to-head in the final.
