U.S. District Court Judge Michael Shipp issued his ruling on whether New Jersey will be able to offer sports betting beginning this weekend at Monmouth Park racetrack. The decision was made shortly after 4:50 pm ET. The judge issued a temporary restraining order that would prevent that track and other venues from offering sports betting in the immediate future.
The NFL and other professional sports leagues had asked the court to block Governor Chris Christie’s bid to permit the Monmouth Park racetrack to begin taking action on this week’s NFL games.
The leagues requested an immediate restraining order until a future decision is made on the complaint arguing New Jersey is in violation of a federal sports betting bill. Five other states, including Nevada, are allowed to offer gambling on sporting events. New Jersey asserts that this is grossly unfair.
Prior to Judge Shipp's 4:50 pm ET decision Friday, Monmouth Park had vowed to begin offering sports wagering starting at 7 am Sunday ahead of the day’s NFL games, one of which kicks off at 9 am ET from London.
