Manchester United footballer Ander Herrera issued a statement this week denying any involvement in a match fixing scandal that has so far netted some 41 individuals.

Herrera denied the allegations via his Facebook page:

“In an on-going legal process involving Real Zaragoza (Spain) the club I was honoured to play from 12 until 22 years of age, there are 41 people cited as possible witnesses, of which I am one.

I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results.

If I am ever called to testify in any judicial hearing, I’ll be happy to attend, as my conscience is totally clear.

I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch.”

Japan’s Javier Aguirre and Atlético’s Gabi have also been linked to case.

The match fixing claims center around a La Liga matchup that took place during the 2010-2011 season, more specifically Real Zaragoza’s 2-1 win at Levante.

In its court filing published on Monday, the prosecutor alleged that the Levante players were paid a total of €965,000 (£766,000) in cash to deliberately lose the game.

A judge overseeing the case will rule on whether to move forward with prosecution.
