‘Simpsons’ Creator, Poker Pro Sam Simon Succumbs to Cancer
Sam Simon, the colorful creator of the longest running animated series “The Simpsons” has passed away at the age of 59.
Simon, who was also a regular on the live poker circuit, has outlived his initial prognosis after being diagnosed with colon cancer a few years ago. At the time his life expectancy was no more than six months.
Simon dedicated the remainder of his life to giving away his vast fortune, much of which was derived from “Simpsons” royalties.
“I’ve given most of it away,” he said in 2013 when asked about his wealth on the comedian Marc Maron’s podcast. “I won’t be rich again until we get our quarterly installment from ‘The Simpsons.’ ”
Simon was among the most successful of the celebrity poker players that include the likes of Gabe Kaplan, Jennifer Tilly, Jennifer Harman, Shannon Elizabeth and Tobey Maguire just to name a few.
He had 24 cashouts in sanctioned tournaments totaling close to a half million dollars. Simon also savored four 1st place finishes.
