MLB, Union to Prohibit Players From Taking Part in Daily Fantasy Games
Major League Baseball and the MLB union revealed Friday it will prohibit players from taking part in daily fantasy sports contests involving money.
And it’s not just fantasy baseball. Players will be excluded from taking part in all daily fantasy sports contests.
Earlier this week, at the IMG World Congress in California, commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed that playing fantasy for prizes became part of Rule 21, which prohibits players from gambling. Manfred did acknowledge that he believed fantasy sports not to be gambling per se but still felt compelled to prevent such activity. Sources close to the negotiations feared a potential conflict of interest noting that players could affect the outcome of games and potentially profit from doing so.
Players will still be able to endorse individual daily fantasy sports companies.
