As the Ahmed Zayat story continues to develop, there are similarities between his gambling debt to Costa Rican bookmakers and previous issues which were revealed in 2013.
At the time, Zayat had an unpaid debt of $286,000 to the State of New Jersey – although Zayat claimed after paying part of the debt that, “I don’t know who is playing games here.” According to the Bergen Record, he bounced checks – and claimed “the sports authority had made “many mistakes” regarding the bookkeeping on his account.
At Gambling911 tonight, we have received a statement from Howard Rubinsky, who is at the center of the pending lawsuit against Ahmed Zayat, owner of American Pharoah:
“When one incurs debt, they must pay the bill. I live in a world where a man’s word is his bond, and the truth matters. I pled guilty to being involved in illegal gambling 7 years ago, yet I am held responsible for the 7-figure gambling debt incurred by Ahmed Zayat.
“Ahmed Zayat is a liar, his past and current history indicates he has no moral compass when it comes to telling the truth or taking responsibility for his actions, all the while scapegoating others.
“Ahmed Zayat has lied about having a Harvard degree, bounced checks to the State of New Jersey after blaming them for his gambling debt, blamed a bank he owed millions of dollars to for supposedly misleading him – and he even blamed the jockey club for the misspelling of his prize horse, American Pharoah.
“The truth is Zayat did not attend Harvard, he did owe a bank millions of dollars and declared bankruptcy, did mis-spell the horse’s name, and he lost money gambling in New Jersey - and off-shore.
“While I was convicted for illegal gambling, I am absolutely telling the truth about Ahmed Zayat.
“Zayat’s response to me is the same as his response to the Jockey Club, the State of New Jersey, Harvard University, and banks he owes money to – he blames someone else. The reality is that Ahmed Zayat has a long history of evading the truth and blaming others for his actions.
“Furthermore, If Mr. Zayat does not retract his false claims that I am extorting him, I intend to sue him for libel per se.
“The time must come for Ahmed Zayat to be held responsible for his lies.”
