Surprise second-place finishers Bolivia and Peru will square off in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Although Bolivia lost 5-0 in its last game of the group stage against Chile, its four points were enough to finish in second place. The country will look to advance into the semifinals of the Copa América for the first time since it won the tournament in 1997. The majority of its squad plays in the domestic league, including captain and defensive leader Ronald Raldes. He will need to guide his team to a better defensive performance than the one it put on against Chile if his country is to defeat a tricky opponent.

Peru finished ahead of World Cup quarterfinalists Colombia in a difficult Group C. Only a heartbreaking, last-minute loss against Brazil in the group opener kept Peru from finishing unbeaten, and the 2011 third-place finishers are surely full of confidence at the moment. Like Bolivia, most of Peru’s squad plays in the domestic league, but it has proven quality up front in the likes of Paolo Guerrero, Claudio Pizarro, and Jefferson Farfán, all of whom have had success in major European leagues.

While neither defense is spectacular, this game could see both opponents feeling each other out and playing it safe, and under 2.5 goals scored looks likely. Ultimately, Peru’s talented forwards should prove to be the difference, and a 1-0 or 2-0 win could be the outcome in this interesting affair.
