The Honda Classic
Sportsbook.ag Odds to Win Tournament
The golfers will be heading to Palm Beach Gardens for The Honda Classic at PGA National on Thursday. The winner at last week’s Northern Trust Open ended up being Bubba Watson, who shot a 15-under in the tournament, yet he will not be playing in this week’s event. Fortunately, there still will not be a shortage of studs in this event.
This field will feature players such as Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson and Rickie Fowler. McIlroy actually won this event back in 2012, shooting a 12-under to defeat the runners-up, Tom Gillis and Tiger Woods. Last year’s event was won by Padraig Harrington, who shot a six-under and is the only member of this field with two victories at The Honda Classic.
The best score ever shot on this 7,158-yard course was a 24-under by Justin Leonard back in 2003. With that out of the way, let’s now take a look at who might be winning this event on Sunday:
Rory McIlroy (+550) - McIlroy has not yet won a tournament this season and that has got to be eating away at him. He is one of the best players on the TOUR and it’s time for him to finish first in an event. He was excellent up until the final round of last week’s Northern Trust Open. For the first three days, McIlroy looked to be as sharp as ever. He imploded on day four, though, and that anger will drive him to be a serious contender on Sunday. As mentioned earlier, McIlory won The Honda Classic in 2012 and he also happened to have been a runner-up in 2014. He is extremely comfortable at this course and there are a number of reasons to believe that he will come out ready to win this one.
Phil Mickelson (+1800) - Mickelson has played extremely well this season, finishing tied for third at the CareerBuilder Challenge, tied for 11th at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and second at Pebble Beach just two weeks ago. He will be well rested after sitting out of the Northern Trust Open last week and that gave him more time to prepare for this tournament as well. Mickelson will have every reason to be determined to win this thing on Sunday. The lefty has not won a single event this season and The Honda Classic also happens to be one of the few tournaments he has never won in his career. With +1800 odds, it’s worth taking a shot on Mickelson to win it. He’s one of the best golfers on the TOUR and also happens to be in tremendous form of late.
Luke Donald (+6000) - Donald has not yet played to his potential this season, but he is a very good value here this weekend. Donald has historically been very good at The Honda Classic in his career, winning the event back in 2006 and also being a runner-up in 2008. This is a course that suits his strengths and he will be hoping to break out of his slump and come through with a victory on Sunday. At 60-to-1 there are a lot of worse options when choosing a winner for this weekend. Putting a unit on Donald could pay off huge come Sunday and he’s a good guy to throw in if you are already grabbing favorites like McIlroy and Mickelson.
Padraig Harrington (+10000) - Another guy that is worth putting a unit on is Harrington. In fact, it’d almost be irresponsible not to pick Harrington in this event. As mentioned earlier, Harrington is the only member of this field with two victories at The Honda Classic and he showed that he is somebody that will continue to be a force here by winning it as recently as last year. Harrington has had a solid season so far as well, tying for sixth at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions early in January and tying for 21st in Pebble Beach two weeks ago. He is a serious threat to win on Sunday and could end up resulting in a grand payday.
