The 88th Oscars Awards will air this Saturday and promise to show a good deal of surprises. While last year’s edition presented big shocks in Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, as “Birdman” edged out favorite “Boyhood” for both, this year could see even more unexpected results. And back with momentum is last year’s big winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who has his new movie “The Revenant” nominated for 12 Academy Awards, the most this year.

Leonardo DiCaprio will be the likely favorite to win his first ever award for Best Actor with his role in the film. In the Best Actress category, Brie Larson is the big favorite to win for her role in “Room,” where she plays a mother who, along with her son, has been freed after years of captivity in a small room. Her powerful performance is getting a lot of respect at the books, where she is listed as a –1100 favorite to win the award over Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn,” who follows with +850 odds, and the field, which is listed at a surprising value of +2750.
Best Supporting Actor is slated to go to Sylvester Stallone for his performance in “Creed.” Stallone relives his iconic role as Rocky Balboa to help train upcoming boxer Adonis Johnson, the son of Apollo Creed, who Rocky famously faced off with in the Rocky franchises. Stallone is given –313 odds to take home the award while Mark Rylance of “Bridge of Spies” trails behind with +377 odds.
Alicia Vikander is expected to win Best Supporting Actress for “The Danish Girl.” But Rooney Mara from “Carol” and Kate Winslet from “Steve Jobs” could be valuable betting picks over Vikander.
This year’s race for Best Picture is about as close as any in recent Oscars memory. The betting favorite, “Spotlight,” is listed at +145 odds while “The Revenant” follows close behind at +155. “Spotlight,” is the moving biopic about how Boston Globe reporters uncovered the rampant child sex pattern among priests in the Catholic church. enters the Oscars as the favorite despite losing out on the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Drama to “The Revenant.” Iñárritu’s film is getting most of the action at the sports books as more than 25 percent of bettors are siding with the adventure drama.
Iñárritu is the favorite to repeat as Best Director. The Mexican filmmaker who already won for “Birdman” at last year’s Oscars is looking to make it two in a row with The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He is listed at big odds to take home the award with a staggering –348 line for winning and +259 odds for not.
The Revenant is also expected, by a wide margin, to win the Best Cinematography category. This would mark the third straight year that Emmanuel Lubezki has won the award, giving him the first three-peat in the Academy’s 88-year history. Lubezki also won with Inarritu for “Birdman” a year ago and took the 2014 award for “Gravity.” He is listed at –1224 to win the award, while the field is given very generous +733 odds.
The Oscar for best visual effects may come down to “Mad Max: Fury Road” and J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which are both listed at identical –108 odds under BetDSI to win the Oscar. Most bets are coming in for the latest Star Wars chapter, but George Miller’s input into the Mad Max franchise is not far behind with wagers coming in. In a telling stat of just how far ahead the pair of franchise action movies are from the rest of the pack, the field is listed at +1350 odds.
“Son of Saul,” a Hungarian drama from László Nemes that follows a World War II concentration camp prisoner for 36 hours, is the heavy favorite to win Best Foreign Language Film. The movie has already racked up the hardware with a Best Foreign Language Film win at the Golden Globes and a Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival. The field, where three of every four bettors are placing their wagers on, is given +602 odds.
