Sportsbooks still have the reigning Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos as a formidable team even after Peyton Manning announced his retirement Monday. The Broncos odds of winning Super Bowl 2017 were set at 13-1, sixth shortest after the Patriots, Panthers, Steelers, Packers and Seahawks.
Manning’s retirement after 18 years in the league was hardly a surprise and oddsmakers had already accounted for this occurrence.
"Peyton was a player that guys wanted to play with," Broncos General Manager John Elway said. "That made us better as a team and I'm thrilled that we were able to win a championship in his final year."
The Broncos scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Monday to make everything official.
"I thought about it a lot, prayed about it a lot ... it was just the right time," Manning said. "I don't throw as good as I used to, don't run as good as I used to, but I have always had good timing."
He arrived in Denver on March 20, 2012 after parting ways with the Indianapolis Colts. The Broncos took a major chance on Manning, who had previously undergone surgery and there were no guarantees he would continue to excel moving forward. Four years later, Manning led his team to a Super Bowl Championship.
Manning went 50-15 in Denver, leading the Broncos to four AFC West titles, two Super Bowl trips and the one Super Bowl title.
